Debate and Joe use are dying
Published on January 14, 2005 By zergimmi In International
For a long time now I have been an avid reader of JOEUSER, to the point that I would consider it to be my No: 1 favourite Blogging site, however some where along the line the high quality of debate has gone and been replaced by very narrow, unintelligent name calling banter, no debate just people critising each others political persuasion, personally the reason I started reading and replying to this site was the fact that I debated with people who may not share my view point, getting the old gray matter working and having fun while I did it. Sadly this seems to be no more. Probably the saddest thing is the fact that many of the people who I enjoyed debating hno longer seem to bother Diversity is what makes this site what it is, so debate all you like but do it an intelligent level , and put some interest back in the debate.
I find it hard to read many replies, mainly because they very rarely seem to discuss the theme of the blog, most seem to be the same as the previous and the previous blog, just a lot of name calling and small minded , unintelligent bullshit. I really don't care if some people can't speel, or for that matter vote republican, thats why we live in democracies. You know freedome of thought and expression. Sadly there seems to be very little thought.
Having said this I don't think the quaity of the blogs have lowered , just the replies.

Please can we raise the bar, a lot.

I am all for it. Let's raise the bar on comments.

I have to concur; flaming can be amusing at times, but only if done with panache, and where it is merited. Jumping on someone with a lot of obnoxious insults merely because of a difference of opinion is childish in the extreme.

"but sometimes a simple positive thought provoking counter-reply can really make you think about things."

The same however, could be said about the other type to which you referred; it provokes the type of though that begins with: "Jeez, from which zoo did that whacko escape?".....

You ungrateful, hopelessly romantic sack of shit. Why don't you just go...

Just kidding.

I, too, am disappointed that many who were practically blog-a-minute posters have completely disappeared since November 2nd. I also think there has been a let-down in intensity as people have gotten back to their productive lives - was to be expected. Nonetheless, I still find thoughtful (non-spew) replies, be they fewer in number, and I don't think JoeUser is "dying" at all. I've lately been attracted to the OS Customization forum more than politics. For what it's worth, my opinion is that there have been somewhat fewer "controversial" blogs of late to stimulate the contributory juices. No knock on anyone - I haven't posted any new articles in awhile, let alone any good ones.

(hoping to be semi-worthy )
Cheers,

I have to admit that maybe I was a bit over the top with my DYING comment, I do think that while the Politics section is not as thought provoking has it can be, and in a way this is a good thing for me as I have begun to spend more time reading other section, I do however enjoy a good stoush when it comes to politics, maybe I just lamenting a bit to much and maybe initiate the debate more often. To be fair I have begun to enjoy more some of the lightr subjects and the more it based ones especially. Thanks for your comments.

I think the politics forum suffers from to much left v right mentality. If only those two words were banned from JU!

ALL politics is left V right. It 's all in how far they carry the BS that makes or breaks it.

What about people who are politically incapable of distinguishing their right from their left?

They're the *extreme* idiots of course.

I'd very much disagree with this. Not only does it fail to consider that two way debates do not have to be left versus right, it also assumes that a single topic can label a person and it fails to consider that politics is usually much broader than two with as many opinions as participants. On JU, most political discussions do get dragged into a left v right mentality. If only these two words were banned. We could have the same debates without any labelling. And it's often the labelling that leads to the insulting and name calling.
